LEGAL
Privacy & your data
Last updated: 27 October 2026. This notice explains how ReefRadar at reefradar.org handles personal data. ReefRadar is operated by LAN Media Limited (registered in Scotland, company number SC775540). For service rules, see our terms of service.
Who this applies to
It covers visitors who browse without signing in, people who create an account with email sign-in, and anyone who sends feedback or a legal enquiry through the site.
What we collect
- Browsing without an account. Your dive log, wishlist, species sightings, and profile choices are stored in your browser (local storage) on your device. We do not receive that data unless you sign in and sync.
- Account and sync. If you sign in, we store your email address and the log, wishlist, sightings, and profile data you choose to sync on our server so you can open them on another device.
- Sign-in codes. We send a short-lived numeric code to your email to verify sign-in. We keep only what we need to validate the code and protect the service from abuse.
- Messages you send us. Reach-out bubbles, bug reports, and legal or terms enquiries include the text you write, your email, and sometimes your signed-in account email. We store these so the team can reply.
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics (measurement ID G-FSYK0CYJ3S) to understand aggregate traffic and feature use. Google may set cookies or similar identifiers under its own policies.
- Server logs. Our hosting may record IP address, user agent, and request path for security and reliability. We do not use these logs to build a marketing profile.
How we use data
We use your information to run ReefRadar: authenticate you, sync your log, respond to messages, fix bugs, and improve the site. Analytics help us see which pages are used, not to sell your dive notes.
We process account and message data on the basis of performing our contract with you when you use the service, and our legitimate interests in operating and securing a free research app. Where UK or EU data protection law requires consent (for example some analytics cookies), we rely on your browser settings and the choices Google offers.
What we share
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only where needed to run the site:
- Email delivery — to send sign-in codes and replies to your messages.
- Hosting and infrastructure — where our servers and backups live.
- Map and fonts — when you load the map, your browser requests tiles and fonts from third-party providers. Those requests do not include your dive log text. See map & style credits and sources for attribution.
- Google Analytics — aggregate usage statistics as described by Google.
- Legal requirements — if we must disclose information to comply with law or protect users and the service.
Retention
Synced account data stays until you delete it or ask us to remove your account. Sign-in codes expire quickly. Feedback and support messages are kept as long as needed to handle your request and maintain a reasonable record. Analytics data is retained according to Google’s settings.
Your choices and rights
You can use much of ReefRadar without an account. You can clear local browser data at any time; that removes unsynced logs on that device.
If you are in the UK or EEA, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict use of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. Contact us using the options below and we will respond within the timeframes required by law.
Children
ReefRadar is a general audience dive reference tool. It is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal data without appropriate consent, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
We may update this notice. The date at the top will change when we do. Significant changes may also be highlighted on the site.
