About this dive site
Potato groupers and reef fish on southern Mozambique’s offshore reefs.
Ponta do Ouro is a beach-launch diving base near Mozambique’s southern border. At Checkers, broken reef and sandy patches attract reef fish and potato groupers, known locally as potato bass. Nearby sites vary greatly in depth and exposure, so the operator should choose the reef for your experience and the day’s conditions. Expect a practical briefing for the surf launch, carry the required surface-signalling equipment and observe large groupers without feeding or handling them.
Shore sites reward repeat dives at the same entry marker; check swell, surf and exit points before you kit up. Calendar peak is January - December, but skippers still move sites when wind, swell or current change. Book with a crew that knows Ponta do Ouro day to day, not just the map pin.
